FIRST Lego League Mentorship

Members of Team41 FRC worked alongside 9-14 year olds at The Academy Our Lady of Peace in New Providence as they took on the 2008 FIRST LEGO League challenge "Climate Connections" as the Rookie Team5403. At this level of competition, teams are judged on teamwork, robot design, research projects, as well as their robot’s performance in competition. An overview of their challenge can be found here.

LEGO Outreach Robot Performance
Students chose from 18 possible missions to score points on their game boards. They found the best sequence of missions from "Testing the Levees" to "Studying Wildlife" and designed two different plows for the front of the robot to accomplish different missions.

Research Project
The students chose to research potholes as an effect of climate changes and performed research on how potholes were created, their effects in daily life and possible solutions that could be implemented in society. As a team, students contacted schools in Spain and Hungary to find international solutions to this common problem. For the presentation, the students wrote a creative skit and created posters to share their research.

In Competition
At their first regional competition in Montclair, FLL Team5403 placed 6th in the robot challenge and 2nd in the research presentation! Their excellent project pulled them through to the State competition in Mt. Olive! Finishing about halfway through the 50 teams at the state level, Team5403 completed their spectacular Rookie year in high spirits and new ideas for the future! Mentors from Team41 look forward to a continued partnership with this FLL team and has been inspired by their teamwork and constant support! We also look forward to having them cheer us on at the FRC NJ and NY Regional competition in March!
